There must be dozens of such stories, although many if not most are 
folklore.  My favorite (no idea whether it's true or not) is that after 
his Ph.D. examining committee (suggesting that there was one) passed 
Samuelson on his defense, they decided to adjourn quickly before 
Samuelson started asking them questions.
