A lot of great information here. I am much obliged. If I remember correctly--I think I read it in Kaplan's biography of Whitman--the money that was supposed to go toward the horse and buggy Whitman used to build his tomb; it doesn't get much better than that.

I would love to see Clara's marked-up copy of LOG. What a great piece to have! Does anyone know if Sam's copy contains any marginalia?

Twain also contributed ten dollars in 1885 to a fund established to
purchase a horse and buggy for a by then increasingly infirm Whitman.
Twain's letter accompanying the gift appears, along with many other
letters to and from Whitman, in WALT WHITMAN THE MAN by Thomas Donaldson
(NY: Francis P. Harper, 1896).

Twain wrote (p. 174):

      Elmira, Augusts 26, 1885
Dear Mr. ____:
    (Ten dollars inclosed)
I comply instantly, with thanks for letting me in. I have great
veneration for the old man, and would be glad to help pay for his
turnout's board, year after year, and buy another when it fails.

              Truly yours,
                    S.L. Clemens
