I always used the University of California edition, "the authoritative 
text" in the Mark Twain Library collection.  Great notes, glossary, 
maps, and references, but best of all, all the original illustrations.  
I also loved to support the Mark Twain Papers and the UC Press.  It's 
still listed as in print.
