Adam Smith: "I have the same opinion of Sir James Stewarts Book that you
have. Without once mentioning it, I flatter myself, that every false
principle in it, will meet with a clear and distinct confutation in
mine." (Smith letter to William Pulteney, Sept. 1772, p. 164 of Smith's
Correspondence) Many close readers of Smith have received the impression
that he was less than just in citing his sources; and that Smith's
cleverness in this domain may have contributed to the impression that
Smith is the founder of the discipline.
