As dozens of sources inform us, Twain's "The Private History of a
Campaign that Failed" was written for the CENTURY's series of Civil War
reminiscences (and appeared in the magazine in December 1885).

Well and good, but if my facsimile edition is to be trusted, Twain's
piece does NOT appear in BATTLES AND LEADERS OF THE CIVIL WAR, the
popular 4-volume work based on the magazine series. Does anyone know
why the "Private History" wasn't reprinted in BATTLES AND LEADERS? Is
there any correspondence pertaining to its exclusion?

All information will be much appreciated by
Mark Coburn
