The Mark Twain Forum is pleased to announce a new addition to the photo
gallery. Thanks to the kindness of Dr. Howard G. Baetzhold, we now have a
photo-scan of the first conference of editors of the Iowa-California
Edition of the Works of Mark Twain, held at the University of Iowa, Iowa
City, on July 10-11, 1964. Many of you may recall seeing the photo in 1993
at "The State of Mark Twain Studies Conference" in Elmira, when it was
shown by Dr. Hamlin Hill during his presentation.

To view the photo visit the TwainWeb at:

Follow the link to the Photo Gallery.

The Works of Mark Twain was conceived by John Gerber in Iowa City in 1961
and was organized in 1962. (see Victor Fischer's entry on the "Mark Twain
Project" {page 495} in _The Mark Twain Encyclopedia_.)

The following pioneers of Mark Twain scholarship are in the photograph:

Hennig Cohen (Pennsylvania), Warner Barnes (Iowa), Walter Blair (Chicago),
Gladys Bellamy (Southwestern State College, Okla.), Roger Salomon
(Case-Western Reserve), Ed Barber (Harper representative), William Todd
(Texas-Austin), Arlin Turner (Duke), William Gibson (New York University),
Franklin Rogers (Wisconsin-Milwaukee), Alan Bates (Chicago?),
Howard Baetzhold (Butler U.), Hamlin Hill (Wyoming), James Willams
(Fairleigh Dickinson), Louis Budd (Duke), John Gerber (Iowa), Paul Baender
(Iowa), Edgar Branch (Miami of Ohio), Albert Stone (Emory), Frederick
Anderson (Editor, Mark Twain Papers, Berkeley)

Absent: Leon Dickinson (Missouri-Columbia), Lewis Leary (Columbia)

(University designations are those at which the editors were teaching at
the time.)

Now deceased: Gladys Bellamy, Walter Blair, William Gibson, Lewis Leary,
Arlin Turner, Frederick Anderson, Hennig Cohen.
