Mark Twain Circle: MLA 2002 Panel Proposals
Mark Twain and New York
The Mark Twain Circle invites contributions for a panel exploring Twain’s
various interactions and experiences in New York. Panelists may reflect upon
Twain's specific relationship to the city, particularly at the end of his
career. However, panelists may choose to examine more generally Twain’s
responses to urban experience, that is, the economics, the politics, and the
culture embodied by New York. Finally, this topic also gives panelists the
opportunity to discuss Twain’s New York performances and the type of humor
inspired by the city. Please send an abstract and title to Ann Ryan,
Department of English, Le Moyne College, Syracuse N.Y. 13214, or,
[log in to unmask] Deadline for submissions is April 1.
Mark Twain and the Politics of Righteousness
Mark Twain’s responses to various forms of nationalism, religious dogma,
fundamentalism, and imperialist politics position him at the moment as a
remarkably prescient cultural critic. The Mark Twain Circle invites
panelists to explore the image and/or reality of Twain as an American
prophet, as well as the historical and ideological realities he engaged.
Panelists may also examine the contemporary cultural inheritance of Twain’s
political and religious writings. Please send an abstract and title to Ann
Ryan, Department of English, Le Moyne College, Syracuse N.Y. 13214, or,
[log in to unmask] Deadline for submissions is April 1.
