Jerry Muller's *The Mind and The Market* is an intellectual history of responses to Commercial Society, including but not limited at all to economists.  Smith, Burle, Hegel, Voltaire and Matthew Arnold are some of the thinkers considered. There is lots on the ethical implications of  market society. 


Apart from HET, Elizabeth Anderson's *Value in Ethics and Economics" (1993)  ought to be a classic.
