Ben,

You have eloquently expressed everything that I was trying to say the
other day. There are only two possibilities for someone claiming to have
no racist instincts at all. Either they're trying to fool themselves or
trying to fool you. Interestingly, the words "racism" and "racist" are
fairly new to the English language. Checking the journals in JSTOR, we
see that the two words only show up in general usage beginning in the
mid-1930's. The word "Enthought" is found liberally in Google, but you
may lay claim to "Enthoughted." Enthought is the name of a company, but
not one so successful that its name is used as a verb.
