There is a specific reference to the telephone in The Autobiog. of Mark
Twain
(edited by Charles Neider) -- pg. 232-233.  There are wonderful anecdotes in
other sources.  If I remember correctly, there's a great story in Katy
Leary's A Lifetime with Mark Twain as well as many other books.
