Further to the references noted by David Fears, (not sure if this has been
posted) there is a reference to KKK in one of Tw's unsigned but attributed
"Galaxy" articles headed "Inspired Humor", 19 August 1869.

It reads in part ...

"But with notes attached, explaining that this severely virtuous Democracy
is the Democracy whose devotees plunged the nation into a monstrous civil
war; burned colored orphan asylums; removed Mr. Lincoln in an abrupt and
peculiarly democratic way; instituted the Klu-Klux-Klan; ran for Vice
President the melancholy fragment which whiskey had left of what was once
Francis P.Blair; sapped the public Treasury under Johnson ..."
