I'm trying to identify a Mark Twain story I read several years ago, based on
a short passage I remember.  (It's that passage that I want to see again.)
Here is the passage as I remember it, although I have probably got some of
it wrong:

The author relates a story of being in a tavern or similar establishment and
having a conversation with a captain whose experimental torpedo boat or
submarine has just sunk across the harbor, with the loss of much of the
crew.  The captain was on board but escaped.

I'd appreciate anyone identifying the story or pointing me in the right
direction.  Thanks.
