I think the invisible hand is first and foremost about "unintended 
system-consequences of individuals' behaviours, where those 
system-effects are usually socially beneficial, though they need not 
be so in all cases" -- quoting myself ("The Science of Wealth: ...", 
Routledge, 2009, p. 337), from a long footnote on the concept.
