The best group of economic historians in the U.S. might be at the
University of California at Davis.  One warning though:  The first year
theory courses feature high-level math (or at least they did so in
2006-07).  In one recent year, every American first-year student was
bounced from the program, several of whom wanted to  work with the
historians.
