I hope they thought as highly of her book as I did and that my review in the
Forum adequately expressed my own admiration.
My reviews tend to run beyond the 2,000 word limit for Forum book reviews,
and are wisely and thoughtfully trimmed down by Barbara Schmidt --with input
from others as needed. For example, my review of Hal Holbrook's
autobiography had a longer discussion of 19th century Mark Twain imposters
and impersonators, which has little to do with Hal Holbrook's compelling
life story. Likewise, my review of Harris's book included mentions of other
books on the formation of the American identity and how it fed into the
attitudes that shaped American imperlialism, in particular, two humorous but
historically accurate books by Sarah Vowell, THE WORDY SHIPMATES and
UNFAMILIAR FISHES, as well as Nell Painter's THE HISTORY OF WHITE PEOPLE.
These were certainly tangents and distractions that had no proper place in
my review, but the highest compliment I can pay any writer is to say that
their words provoked curiosity in a subject, inspiring further reading, and
her book does that. Jim Zwick would have loved it.
