Hi Folks --
After sending out the last list about a week ago I heard about enough more
titles in this eclectic category of "Mark Twain spinoffs" to warrant
sending you a revised list, so here it is. I haven't seen more than a
handful of these books, though I'm taking a vow to look at all of them this
semester. Until then, I haven't tried to distinguish between books that
"revise" a particular Twain text (like *Becky* or *Finn*), books that could
be called (as some are) *Further Adventures . . .* -- i.e. attempts at
sequels or extensions of a Twain text, adaptations of Twain stories for
"juvenile readers" (Barbara Schmidt, who along with Patti Philippon sent me
the most new titles this second round, adds the cautionary notice that
"There are more in children's lit but I have never compiled a listing of
all of them"), and simply "books in which Mark Twain appears as a
character." Nor does the list contain any of the graphic adaptations of
Twain's work that Derek Royal discusses in the current *Mark Twain Annual,*
though it would be great to have a complete list of them too. And it only
includes one dramatization, though "plays spun off from Twain texts or his
character" should probably be another list.
And I warn you that unless you tell me to stop, I'll send a re-revised
version of the list when I can sort it into more useful categories, and as
I learn about other titles that should be on it (of which I am beginning to
suspect that there could be PLENTY!). Thanks to all who have helped, Steve
