"Praise is well, compliment is well, but affection -- that is the last and final and most precious reward that any man can win, whether by character or achievement." -- Mark TwainLet us always remember that Hal Holbrook won that precious reward through character AND achievement. A heartfelt thought tonight from a heartbroken friend.

Like Kevin, I was fortunate to have known Hal personally and to have worked with him several times. However, instead of offering my own lengthy reminiscences here, I'll merely say that I shall remember Hal most for his kindness and generosity. I'm entirely confident that today even the undertaker is sorry.
