The HES email list has 677 subscribers. That counts persons, not eddresses
(some people use two), and incorporates a few other corrections. Here is
the distribution by large regions, countries, and a few institutions.

There are five simplistic "regions" of residence: US America, Europe,
Asia (including Turkey and Indonesia), Latin America, and "Other"
(Canada, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand). "Other" subscribers
have always resided in precisely those four countries and the category
was called "Commonwealth" in previous editions of this report.
"English" is USAmerica, UK and Ireland from "Europe", and "Other".

"Country" of residence is commonly indicated by the last word of an email
address. I have allocated {.com .net .org .edu .gov .us .mil .int} (131)
to country of residence if known (127) or to US America if unknown (4).
HES has subscribers in 46 countries, newly this year in Estonia and Uruguay.
Next in number of subscribers after US America with 288 subscribers (43%)
is UK Britain with 48 (7%).

SUBSCRIBERS BY INSTITUTION

"Institution" is generally indicated by one or two components of an
email address preceding the last component or "country".
Some real institutions with several subscribers are undercounted here
because of their addressing conventions or because some affiliated
persons subscribe from an outside address. Other real institutions
without several subscribers may be listed here because former students
or workers retain their email accounts.
HES has four or more subscribers with email service at each of these
institutions (excluding administrative subscriptions at EH.Net).

TECHNICAL NOTES
===============
- Each person is counted once, at current residence (or so I guess) for
those with two subscriptions.
- "US America" includes the majority of those persons with eddresses
ending {.org .com .net .edu .us .gov .mil}. Except for the {.edu},
I have asked everyone who uses one of these domains. Now 2009-09-12,
only 4 of 130 are unknown; they are counted as USA. For the {.edu},
by fortune, wisdom, or insight I know that two are outside the USA.
- "English" counts persons residing in "US America" as just defined, or
in UKBritain, Ireland, Canada, South Africa, Australia, or New Zealand.
In terms of the Large Regions, it is "USAmerica", Britain and Ireland
from "Europe", and "Other". It is a sloppy category in many respects.
