For Stigler's quotation for the AEA Calendar, how about this one:
"... it is hard to believe that any task, no matter how great its
magnitude, is so large that the market cannot deal with it, if it is
capable of being dealt with by man. Did not Great Britain in Smith's
time leave the government of India, already a nation of several
hundred million beings, to a corporation called the East India
Company? Was not the early economic development of Canada entrusted
primarily to the Hudson's Bay Company?" ("The Adam Smith
Lecture: The Effect of Government on Economic Efficiency", Business
Economics, January 1988, Volume XXIII (1): 7-13. The quote is from
pp. 7-8, emphasis in original.)
I believe this quote gives excellent insight into Stigler's
rhetorical strategy, as well as his character. It could possibly
replace the other quote beginning with Smith and talking about the
state (the third quote).
