First, I am really sorry if I inadvertently sent your message to the forum.
I usually try to be very careful about who I'm replying to, and whether
it's on the list or off, but I must have been distracted when I wrote. I'm
sorry. I guess that's what happens when you have a sick kid on your lap and
you're trying to sort through emails...
Second, thank you for your thoughtful comments about each of the authors. I
really appreciate them. While I've read those authors, I am by no means
well-read in that area and honestly didn't know. Tribal affiliation seems
like the most correct to me. Anyway, I have no doubt that "Indian Joe"
rolls off the tongue a lot easier than Amerindian Joe or Native American
Joe, but was just curious if more thought went into that decision beyond the
ease of pronunciation. And, more than anything was interested that the
thought process behind that decision wasn't discussed in the introduction
(aside from calling attention to the change, and offering the comment that
"Indian itself commemorates a misnomer dating back to Columbus").
Last, to connect back to the larger discussion of the original reason stated
by Dr. Gribben for this new edition... while it's useful to look to these
authors for guidance, it seems like, since Dr. Gribben is concerned about
students and teachers not being comfortable dealing with Twain's language,
shouldn't they be considered also? What do Native American students prefer
to be called? Certainly there isn't the same level of stigma surrounding
the I-word as there is surrounding the N-word, but if you're going to do
one, it seems like you should do all equally and sensitively.
And, I think, that's an incredibly difficult bridge to cross. Stirring the
waters just allows for more unexpected trouble. Leave the text be and rely
on the teachers to establish a safe environment for the work to be taught.
If that can't be done, it seems like there are plenty of other works that
could be used. Honestly, I'd rather not have it taught than in an altered
form.
