Deadline for the Hagley-Wintherthur Fellowships is December 1, 1996. 
A cooperative program of short-to medium-term research fellowships for 
scholars interested in the historical and cultural relationships between 
economic life and the arts,  including design, architecture, crafts, and 
the fine arts.  Fellows receive a stipend, make use of the rich research 
collections of the Winterthur Museum and Gardens and the Hagley Museum 
and Library, and participate in a seminar that meets at both sponsoring 
institutions. 
 
Eligibility:  These fellowships are intended to support serious scholarly 
work.  They enable individuals to pursue advanced study and research in 
the collections of both Hagley and Winterthur.  They are available to 
both degree candidates and senior scholars, as well as applicants without 
advanced degrees.  Applications are welcome from scholars and writers 
working independently as well as college and university teachers, 
librarians, archivists, museum curators, and scholars from fields other 
than the humanities. 
 
Conditions:  Fellowship recipients are required to spend their time in 
residence at Hagley and Winterthur, or at least to travel there on a 
regular and consistent basis.  Low-cost rental accommodations may be 
available at both institutions.  As much as possible, recipients should 
be prepared to devote their full time to the fellowship for the duration 
of their appointment.  The fellowship program is also valuable for the 
collegial association it provides.  As centers for advanced study in the 
humanities, Hagley and Winterthur are focal points for a community of 
scholars.  Fellows are expected to participate in seminars which meet at 
both institutions, as well as attend noontime colloquia, lectures, 
concerts, exhibits, and other public programs offered during their tenure. 
 
Awards:  Stipends are for a minimum of one month and a maximum of six 
months at no more than $1,000 per month.

        1.      Fellowship application cover sheet. 
 
        2.      Cover letter officially requesting the fellowship and 
                noting your social security number. 
 
        3.      Copy of current resume or curriculum vitae.  Please 
                limit to no more than four pages in length. 
 
        4.      A description of at least 5 pages in length of your 
                proposed research project.  Please provide information on 
                the significance of the work and your research 
                methodology.  Competitive proposals will demonstrate 
                the relevance of the project to Hagley's and Winterthur's 
                fields of interest and include a discussion of collections 
                to be used and their importance to the plan of work. 
 
        5.      Two letters of recommendation by persons familiar with 
                your project and current research in its subject and period. 
 
Notification:  Deadline for applications will be December 1, 1996. 
Awards will be announced immediately following the meeting of the 
Hagley-Winterthur Research Committee.
