If you're going to drag in the Brooks thesis, balance it with DeVoto's
reply, _Mark Twain's America_, which did at least as much to shape Twain
criticism.

And if you're going to select your picks on the basis of influence as
well as being readable, Kenneth Lynn's _MT and Southwestern Humor_ ,
Walter Blair's _MT & Huck Finn_, and Henry Nash Smith's _Mark Twain: The
Development of a Writer_ all cast long shadows over Twain criticism.
