For those interested in the impact of McCarthyism on the economics
profession I thought I should draw your attention to a recent article of
interest:
W.U. Solberg and R.W. Tomilson, "Academic McCarthyism and Keynesian
economics: The Bowen controversy at the University of Illinois." HOPE 29
(1): 55-81.
Solberg and Tomilson show that academic McCarthyism drove out both the
nascent Keynesians and those who were more "toolkit"-oriented. Among those
affected: Reid, Hurwicz, Eisner, Patinkin, Brady, and Modigliani.
