Roger Sandilands reported on Joan Robinson's observation, in 1980, that she "would rather
have the grievance" than the Nobel Prize. I remember that she made an almost identical
remark in the fall of 1982 when I told her that George Stigler had won the prize--I
believe I was the first person she heard the news from. She was a visiting professor
(Bernhard Chair) at Williams that semester. I remember distinctly the word "grievance."
However, I remember her also saying that she would have liked to have the money so she
could donate it to the antinuclear movement. I don't remember her making any comments
about Stigler.
