Dear list-members
I have two queries from students, one short, one
longer. Any help would be very gratefully
received. (Offline, please, unless you think
what you have to say will be of general interest.)
Many thanks
1. Where are Richard Stone's papers held - at
the Treasury or at Cambridge somewhere, perhaps?
2. The second enquirer (a final year UG student
in history and philosophy of science who will be
starting an MSc in Economic History in October
09) is looking for a summer school offering an
introductory programme in history of economic
thought aimed at graduate students, rather than
specialised seminars for near-completion PhD
students, or an institution offering summer
research internships in the history of economic
thought. He says "Last summer I secured a £1000
scholarship from the Royal Greenwich Observatory
to research the divisions between supporters and
detractors of state funding for science that
emerged within the British astronomical community
in the 1870s/80s. This summer I would like to try
to build on this previous work and investigate
the historical origins of the conception of
science as a public good. Last year I was quite
intrigued to discover that the "public good" line
of argument did not seem to pop up at all in
discussions about science funding in the 1880s -
the lack of much scholarship on this question
seems an opportunity to produce a little piece of research."
