The Centre for Innovation and Research in International Development
(CIRID), a part of UC Global at the University of Calgary, invites
applications for a Project Coordinator, Healthy Child Uganda. This
full-time Fixed Term position has an expected end date of April 30,
2010 with the possibility of extension (dependent on project
funding).
As Project Coordinator for the Strengthening Child Health - Rural
Uganda Project (also refered to as Healthy Child Uganda) you will be
reporting to and providing coordination and implementation assistance
to the Healthy Child Uganda Canadian Project Director.
Healthy Child Uganda is a community-based child health education
initiative in rural southwestern Uganda which promotes improved
survival and health for children under five through training of
village-based health volunteers. There is an excellent local team in
Uganda who coordinates field activities and reports to the Canadian
team. The project addresses local health issues from many levels with
an emphasis on community development (including education, gender,
income generating, micro projects and action plans) with support also
for research, health centre and faculty development. Please see the

The Project is funded by the British Council, Global Health Research
Initiative - International Development Research Centre and the
Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) through the
Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) University
Partnership Program.
The normal work hours are Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with
occasional evening and weekend work.
This full-time position will be until April 30, 2010 with the
possibility of renewal dependent on performance and secure funding.
The workweek will be 37.5 hours though some periods may be busier as
dictated by the volume of project activities. Thus longer weekdays or
weekend work may be required, especially during overseas work.
Short-term travel to Mbarara, Uganda will be required once or twice.
The project coordinator will work in a one-person office at the
Alberta Childrens Hospital with limited direct supervision. This
individual will be expected to spend time also on main campus of the
University of Calgary.
Position Requirements
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not
limited to):
The Project Coordinator will oversee project activities, logistics,
schedules, budgets and reporting for Healthy Child Uganda. S/he will
be a motivated and self-directed individual with good time
management, interpersonal and coordination skills. This individual
will work efficiently, combining solid administrative and computer
skills with an interest and skills in project management including
basic financial management. The coordinator will be required to plan
project activities, prepare reports and interact with staff and
volunteers with diverse backgrounds. Flexibility will be important to
balance urgent needs and activities as they arise. Experience in
community development or community health and prior work in Africa or
other resource-poor settings is an asset.
Reporting and Operational Management:
Oversee planning and delivery of activities within the project
workplan
Develop monitoring/data collection tools and document field
activities
Report on project progress to AUCC and donors including narrative
and technical reports
Finance/Logistics/Administration:
Oversee project budget, track expenses, input and report expense
claims
Work with accountant to prepare financial reports for AUCC and
funders
Coordinate procurement of services and goods for project activities
Maintain existing databases and project files including project
contacts, in kinds, resources, reports, references, publications and
research
Organize and minute committee meetings
Manage human resources including support for Ugandan team,
preparation of appointment letters
Help organize international itineraries and travel arrangements
Program Development:
Develop an annual workplan and budget with project team members
Support development of grant applications and supporting documents
Aid team in capacity building, developing health curricula and
producing educational materials
Research
Assist project team with organizing for field research and writing
research reports
Communication and Representation:
Provide first point of contact for stakeholder groups, funders,
media and project team members
Communicate regularly with Ugandan and Canadian team members
Represent the project to the public
Interact with funders, funding partners, and media
Attend conferences, workshops and meetings as a project
representative
Create, update and disseminate newsletters, brochures, website and
other public relations materials
Requirements:
Education:
An undergraduate degree in a related field is required; postgraduate
degree is an asset.
Experience:
A minimum of two years in a related position is required. Past
experience in the following would be beneficial:
Work in Africa or resource-poor setting and cross-cultural setting
Community health programming or community development
CIDA-funded projects
Conducting research and writing research reports/articles
Fund raising
Grant or proposal writing
Non-profit or university work experience
Business or financial management
Knowledge and Technical Skills:
Management training or experience in Results Based Management or
similar reporting method
Solid computer skills including strong skills in Microsoft Word and
Powerpoint. Advanced skills in Excel. Desktop publishing and Endnote
an asset.
Basic bookkeeping skills
Communication and Teamwork:
Strong writing skills
Excellent interpersonal skills, including cross cultural exchange
Positive team attitude and motivation for project success
Experience and willingness to work closely with university,
government and national funding agencies
Innovativeness/Initiative and Personal Effectiveness:
Patience and excellent time management and organizational skills to
handle a heavy, multi-task workload
Independent problem-solving and resourcefulness
High level of responsibility and accountability
Demonstrated ability to work independently
