I am not aware that anyone is arguing against the suggestion that the
British put all those lives at risk to further their war effort. Your post
seems designed primarily to divert attention away from a failure of Sen’s
theorising to address key historical facts.
Steve Kates claimed “I am convinced there is this subject taught at
universities called "economics", and there is this aspect of the world that
is called "the economy", but the first has only a remote relationship to the
second.”
I cannot comment directly on that, but the gap between academic theorising
about past economies and the real historical economic facts seems to me huge
and very troubling, in this case and very many others
