I don't know if this is true, but it might explain why some of my students claim that Twain reads funnier under certain conditions.  Before anyone on this list performs this experiment oneself, these students have determined that the story of Jim Blaine's grandfather's ram should never be read under the influence of cannabis: the risk of permanent cognitive impairment is far too great.
