Yes, this story is true and the linked article has it about right as far
as the details go. The publication delay in the U. S. until February 1885
explains why you sometimes see different dates for the first publication
of the book: England - 1884 and U.S. - 1885. And the story itself is a
delightful tidbit that can somehow humanize a "classic book" for graduates
and undergraduates alike.
