Readers of this list will regret to learn of the death of F. Taylor
Ostrander, Jr., in Williamstown, Mass., on November 10. He was 101 years old.
Ostrander's colorful career as a student of economics at Williams College,
Oxford, and the University of Chicago, and as a practitioner in public
service and private industry from the inter-war years to the early 1980s,
was brought to the attention of historians of economics in recent years by
Warren Samuels (et al.) in Research in the History of Economic Thought and
Methodology, interspersed in vols. 22 to 28 (2004-2010). His wonderfully
preserved papers from his time in the Treasury Department's Division of
Monetary Research under Harry Dexter White, from 1936 to 1940, are indexed
in RHETM vol. 27C. They are now at the FDR Presidential Library.
An obituary may be found at:
http://www.iberkshires.com/obituaries_new.php?ob_id=9632. Longer surveys of
Ostrander's life and work include Samuels' “F. Taylor Ostrander: a Brief
Biography,” in RHETM, vol. 22B (2004); and Ostrander's autobiographical
essay in RHETM, vol. 27C (2009).
He was a remarkable man and witness to extraordinary events. He will be
missed for his lively mind and conversation, and appreciated for the
documents that he left for historians of economics.
