Dear Axel,

The first brightest and clearest exposition of
the idea of diminishing marginal utility can be
found in the two articles of Jules Dupuit
published in the Annales des Ponts et Chaussées.
The references are the following:

dupuit, j. (1844), « De la mesure de l'utilité
des travaux publics », Annales des Ponts et
Chaussées, 2e série, n° 116, tome 8, 2e semestre, pp. 332-75.

dupuit, j. (1849), « De l'influence des péages
sur l'utilité des voies de communication »,
Annales des Ponts et Chaussées, Mémoires et
documents, 2e série, n° 207, Mars-Avril, pp. 170-248.

You can also refer to Heinrich GOSSEN (1854).

Best,

Guy Numa
