Paper Money in Theory and Practice in History
International Workshop
"The Origin of Paper Money in Theory and Practice”
Hosted by the Economics Department, City University London
8-9 April 2010
Deadline for abstracts: 15 December 2009
Paper and fiat monies have been used as means of
exchange for many centuries, and their
circulation has been accompanied by the emergence
of a series of theories attempting to
explain the dilemmas that they pose. The
objective of this workshop is to explore and
illuminate the origin and acceptance of paper
money and paper monetary systems. We will
therefore focus on the development of monetary
systems and monetary theory within the
context of paper money by combining empirical
historical research with research on the
history of economic theory specifically on money and credit.
Abstracts of not more than 400 words should be
sent to the workshop organizers by 15
December 2009
