The problem you wrote about is one that happens from time to time on email
discussion groups, and unfortunately there is not a whole lot that can be
done about it. Here's what happened:

One of the people responding to the Time in economic theory conf. posting
had an automatic code attached to their message that asked for receipt
confirmation. Anyone on the list whose email reader is programmed to
respond to requests for confirmation will now automatically send a RCPT:
confirmation when they open that particular message.

If you want to avoid the problem, do the following: ensure that your
program does not ask for, or respond to, receipt confirmation
requests. When RCPT: confirmations do appear on the list, simply delete
the messages.

There's not much else one can do, once the loop is initiated, except wait
it out.
