Stephen,  My comment may or may not relate to the discussion of Huck 

Finn but I can not let your comments of race, in general, go 
unchallenged. You may call yourself a racist, if you wish,  but I call 
foul on your tainting all of us and US as "more insidiously and 
unconsciously racist in 2021."  I recognize shades of critical race 
theory here in your terminology.   I grew up in a small midwestern town 
with no blacks to be seen or heard.  Still, as a young teen in the late 
1950's I witnessed,  on our "black and white TV", the attempts at school 
desegregation and the physical abuse of blacks demonstrating in the 
streets.  What was I to think?  I might have thought this was how it was 
supposed to be, just a fact of life, since I had no life experience 
otherwise.  But no,  I could feel it was not right.  My feelings grew 
from my intellect and my soul. It is the same intellect and soul that is 
shared by most reasonable Americans.  And, I believe, so it was with 

Mark Twain as his intellect grew and as he became in touch with his 
soul.     Philip

And to me, that's the wonderful thing about Huck Finn -- that it racist and anti-racist, like our culture then and now, and so can hold a really powerful mirror up to the best and worst about ourselves.  Could Mark Twain have been so beloved as a figure in our culture if he didn't know how to give white audiences what they wanted?  That his work often transcends their appetites is why we spend so much of our lives reading and thinking about him.
