Peter,

Clemens writes about watching Beecher's sermon for the first time in a Feb.
1867 letter to the ALTA -- text online here --

However, it appears they formally met in January 1868 through Clemens's
connections to the Langdon family and possibly Emma Beach. If you search
the online letters database for January 1868 for letters mentioning
Beecher, you will find letters discussing Beecher including a letter to
Clemens's mother and sister describing dinner with Mr Beecher.
