Proust's 'In Search of Lost Time' has an archivist and an historian who compete with each other at parties over such important topics as when the local apple season ends, and what exactly is hay fever (the archivist explains that it's the fashionable complaint of the day).

Subject: Re: portrayal of Archives in literature and movies
Incidentally, I attended a reading at the International Festival of
Authors in Toronto on Sunday where I saw Drago Jancar read from his
book 'The Tree with No Name' where the main character appears to be an
archivist from communist Slovenia. I haven't read the book so I don't
know how prominent the archives are in it, but it was mentioned during
the reading.
However, the archives feature pretty strongly in the the novel 'War &
War' by the Hungarian novelist, Laszlo Krasznahorkai (say it ten times
fast) from New Directions 2006.
