Mario, that story is like a dagger through my heart every time I hear it.

Subject: Re: [SHOE] PhD programs requiring History of Economic Thought

You may be interested in why NYU (many years ago) abolished the required History of Thought course for Ph.D. students. Will Baumol argued that it was no longer a good idea to require it because the opportunity cost of studying the history of economic thought had now risen to a very high level. Wassily Leontief argued strongly that it should be kept. I voted with Leontief. Baumol won.

Dear Colleagues,
Does anyone know of a recent tally of PhD programs that continue to require a course in History of Economic Thought?
Btw, AU continues the tradition.

Thanks for any help.
