Hal, Twichell was a trustee of Atlanta University (his sister had been married to its first president) and he encountered DuBois in 1904. From my précis of Twichell's journal for that year:

May 20 - To Atlanta, bacalaureate sermon.
Preached First Cong. Ch. (colored)
address U. morning prayers
classmate Buck Wilson
Mrs Buck widow of late Minister to Japan and "great friend of my sister"
Maj and Mrs French at Fort McPherson "whom Ned Ware knew (Ned being in my company all day)"
"Tuesday I attended the Ninth Annual Conference (at the University) on the subject of "Negro Crime in Georgia." The speakers were mostly Negroes (men and women) but three white pastors of Atlanta made addresses as did Mr. F.B. Sanborn of Concord, Mass. The Conference was under the direction of Prof. Dubois and was vastly interesting. Wednesday p.m. the meeting of the Trustees was held."
Has to return to Hartford for ordination of Charles K Tracy, Philip C Wolcott
"The persons I met whom I was most interested to see were Prof. Dubois and Mr. Sanborn, with the latter of whom I made a call on Mr. Joel Chandler Harris ("Uncle Remus") who received us most kindly. I had seen him before more than once."
