I'm aware of two times Mark Twain was in the Downieville *Mountain
Messenger*, a paper he certainly didn't "write for" -- both pieces are
reprinted from the Virginia City *Territorial Enterprise*. One is "Just
'One More Unfortunate' " (Messenger, 1 July 1865) and the other is "How to
Secure the Attendance of Adults" (Messenger, 20 Jan 1866). These are not
bylined "Sam Clemens," were not written in Downieville, and are not routine
reportage suggestive of a hangover. Of course if Editor Russell knows of
other items I'd be very glad to hear about them. He unaccountably seems to
be more interested in the survival of his paper than in its possible
contribution to MT bibliography.
