Qualified Howland family genealogists have never been able to go back beyond Bob Howland's grandfather, Waterman Howland Sr.
A John Howland and the Waterman family were close in Rhode Island at the time of the War of 1812, but I have not found a marriage tie to the Waterman family to initiate the surname Waterman as a Christian name for a Howland.
