GRIEF INTERVENTION FOR CARE PROVIDERS WORKING WITH OLDER ADULTS

AN ONLINE WORKSHOP FOR HEALTHCARE & OTHER PROFESSIONALS

When: Mon October 7th to Sun November 3rd, 2013 (4 weeks) ONLINE weekly at your discretion

This 4 week workshop is for healthcare professionals and family caregivers of older adults with dementia or other chronic progressive neurological and mental illness. Participants will develop compassionate practice in strengthening resiliency, obtaining tools to acknowledge, assess and assist caregivers from a loss/grief perspective.This 4 week workshop is for healthcare professionals and family caregivers of older adults with dementia or other chronic progressive neurological and mental illness. Participants will develop compassionate practice in strengthening resiliency, obtaining tools to acknowledge, assess and assist caregivers from a loss/grief perspective.

Week one: Loss in the Context of Caregiving

  *   Defining a caregiver
  *   Defining loss
  *   Acknowledging the losses affecting caregiver behaviour & well being
  *   Moving Forward from Loss: Acknowledge, Assess, Assist®

 Week two: Grief as it Manifests in the Caregiving

  *   Defining grief
  *   Determinants of grief expression
  *   Styles of grieving
  *   Grief models applied to caregiving

 Week three: Grief Intervention with Caregivers

  *   Applying the Acknowledge, Assess, Assist® Approach
  *   Assessing caregiver grief
  *   Facilitating caregiver grief vs. death related grief
  *   Assisting strategies

 Week four: Compassion Fatigue, Burnout and Loss

  *   Healthcare providers experience with loss/grief
  *   Acknowledging compassion fatigue and burnout
  *   Assessing compassion fatigue and burnout
  *   Assisting through self-care

Instructor: Eleanor Silverberg, BA Psych, MSW, RSW practices privately as a Professional & Personal Development Coach for Care Providers and has acted personally as a family caregiver and professionally as a community outreach social worker for the Alzheimer Society in York Region, Ontario. She offers grief facilitation to family members caring for adults living with dementia or other progressive neurological and mental illness. She has Certification in Bereavement Education, and has studied grief independently for over 20 years. She developed the 3-A Acknowledge, Assess, Assist® Approach to fill a gap, addressing the impact that loss and grief have in the caregiving experience.  Her academic work in this area has been published in the Omega Journal of Death and Dying, and presented the 3-A Approach at several prominent conferences including at Alzheimer International and the Canadian Association on Gerontology, where it was well received.  Eleanor now provides training in applying the 3-A Approach components to professional and family caregivers.
