CDPAC 2016 Conference
Integrated Chronic Disease Prevention: The Value Proposition
February 23-25 • Hilton Toronto Downtown • Toronto, ON

CDPAC's 6th Pan-Canadian Conference focuses on the health, economic, and social value created through integrated chronic disease prevention. The conference will feature 6 plenary keynotes, 4 featured presentations, 12 workshops, 60 presentations and 16 exhibits addressing seven cross-cutting themes: Economic benefits and return on investment; Wellness of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples; Partnerships; Mental wellness; Workplace health; Inequities; and Evaluation.

With so much to choose from, here are 8 things you don't want to miss:

1) OPENING KEYNOTE Dr. Tim Caulfield will frame the importance of being evidence-based in a candid and insightful way. Dr. Caulfield is the Canada Research Chair in Health Law and Policy; Professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta; and has authored several books including Is Gwyneth Paltrow Wrong About Everything?: When Celebrity Culture and Science Clash.

2) PLENARY Investing in Wellness for First Nations, Inuit and Métis People features Joe Gallagher, CEO of the BC First Nations Health Authority (FNHA), who will discuss the creation of the BC FNHA, a first of its kind in Canada, and examine some of the enhancements and partnerships needed to transform approaches to wellness in Aboriginal communities.

3) PLENARY Nutrition Policy and Health,  featuring Dr. David Hammond and Dr. Tom Warshawski who will outline how nutrition policy is increasingly being recognized as a significant, cost-efficient opportunity to improve public health, and present evidence-based policy interventions to address health and obesity. Dr. Hammond is Associate Professor, at the School of Public Health & Health Systems, University of Waterloo and CIHR Chair in Applied Public Health; and Dr. Warshawski is Chair of the Childhood Obesity Foundation.

4) PLENARY speaker Andreas Souvaliotis, Founder and CEO of Social Change Rewards, on the unique effectiveness of targeted incentives for health behaviour changes on a mass scale and the proud introduction of Carrot Rewards, the world's first national wellness rewards program.

5) FEATURED PRESENTATION on Mental Health, Housing and Homelessness entitled Housing First: Integrating health and housing to achieve social and economic benefits will highlight 24-month social and economic outcomes of the "At Home/Chez Soi" program and describe challenges and solutions to achieving inter- sectorial collaborations.

6) PLENARY Improving Men’s Health: A Worthy Investment with Dr. Larry Goldenberg will review men’s health status in Canada including what it takes for men to get and stay healthy. Dr. Goldenberg will be joined by Dr. Hans Krueger to examine the economic impact of some of the key risk factors for men in Canada. Dr. Goldenberg is Professor in the Department of Urologic Sciences at UBC and Chairman of the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation and Dr. Krueger is Adjunct Professor at the School of Population and Public Health at UBC and President of H. Krueger & Associates Inc.

7) PLENARY Promoting Physical Activity Among Canadian Children: The Evidence and the Impact will examine how we can put in place the right incentives to encourage PA among children; what effects investments in PA generate; and how can we ensure PA continues into adulthood. Featuring presenters Dr. Darren Warburton, Co-Director of the Physical Activity Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention Unit and Full Professor at UBC; and Dr. Brian Timmons, Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at McMaster University.

8) Launch of the Stop Marketing to Kids (M2K) Coalition, co-led by the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Childhood Obesity Foundation, which is focused on advocating for restrictions to food and beverage marketing to children and youth. This session will launch the coalition and introduce their recommendations to guide marketing to kids policy-making in Canada.
