Archivist
Description
The incumbent will lead and initiate the development of the Regional
Corporate Archives program by identifying, acquiring, preserving and making
available the archival records of the Region, associated institutions,
corporations, organizations and individuals.
Duties
searches, appraises for historical value, acquires, catalogues and
displays documents, manuscripts, photographs, maps, audio, video,
digital recordings or other media
researches, develops, recommends and implements policies affecting the
management of the archives
seeks funding from governmental and non-governmental agencies and
prepares grant proposals for supplementary funding to conduct additional
projects
directs preservation and conservation procedures for archival material
ensures the current backlog of inactive and archival records is
controlled
provides customer oriented archival reference services
in conjuction with other IM&A staff, investigates and evaluates the
feasibility and appropriateness of converting records to alternative
media formats to support active, semi-active or archival records
functions and propose new services and practices
identifies appropriate best practice electronic document routing,
workflow and access control under the DOCS Corporate system
ensures access to material in the collections through the maintenance of
a finding aid system
directly supervises an Archives Assistant, volunteers, interns and
contract staff
Qualifications, Skills and Abilities Required
Knowledge of archival principles and practices, an ability to implement
preservation projects/plans for the care and protection of archival records
and an understanding of the principles and practices of recorded
information management and the life cycle of records, filing systems and
retention scheduling, normally acquired through the attainment of a Post
Graduate Degree/Diploma in Information Science/Archival Studies or an
Undergraduate Degree in a related discipline plus five years related
experience. Knowledge of descriptive standards including Rules for
Archival Description (RAD) and finding aid systems; and an ability to
update and recommend improvements to existing finding aids. Understanding
of the legislation governing public access to records. Knowledge of the
application of information technology to archival functions. Skill in the
operation of a computer, working knowledge of various software, including
Word, Excel and database systems for archival tasks. Understanding of
electronic records and how to store and retrieve them safely. Tact,
diplomacy and discretion in handling records which may be extremely
sensitive and personal in nature. Human relations, communications and
organizational skills to effectively organize and coordinate the work of
supervised staff. Negotiations skills to coordinate transfer agreements
for external bodies wishing to transfer inactive records of archival value.
Salary and benefits:
Salary range for this position is $40,075 - $50,095
