Try reading Jim's Journey Homeward by Mark Time for a more faithful retelling of the Huck Finn story.

Subject: James, by Percival Everett

I just finished reading this novel and generally found it to be a good
read with ideas that need to be considered. My only significant issue
is James' (Jim's) level of education. Another point, at the risk of
introducing spoilers, the ending has nothing to do with Phelps Farm, I
don't recall that it was ever mentioned.
