================= HES POSTING ======================

The following seminar in the History of Science and Ideas Seminar series
at Lancaster University may be of interest to some members of HES.

The History of Ideas and Science Discussion Group is a very informal group
intended to bring together staff, postgraduates and enthusiastic
undergraduates with a general interest in the history of ideas, and of
science and medicine in the broadest sense. We meet on alternate
Thursdays in term time at 5.45 for a drink in Furness Bar, which we then
take in to the Senior Common Room next door. Talks, on work in progress
and with themes of general and methodological interest, begin at 6.00,
with discussion from about 6.35 to 7.00. They always close in time for
the University Concerts at 7.30. Some of the less musical adjourn for
another drink and/or a curry.

5 December (week 9): Gwylim Games (History, Lancaster): "To lay up
Treasures on Earth or in Heaven ?" Considerations on Capitalism,
Consumerism and Puritanism in 17th Century New England.

Gwyl is also completing his thesis here. His research has led him to new
reflections on the old, central historical question of the relation
between capitalism and protestantism.
