Subject: [Arcan-l] My final thoughts on the matter

In spite of the negativity I have received from archival colleagues across this country, both on- and off-list, I stand by the job description.

I am thankful for the support I receive from my institution who are allowing me to grow my team and recruit another full-time, permanent archivist role, with benefits, when so many of my colleagues are unable to do this.

I am thankful for the support of my colleagues across the country, who also believe in the job description I took many months to create.

I am thankful that I am able to invite prospective candidates to connect directly with me before they apply so that I can answer any questions they may have.

I believe there are wider issues within our community that need to be addressed, however, people are choosing to attack me instead.

We all know what the issues are but I think we are probably tired of trying to address them.

These attacks I have received are an embarrassment to our profession.

If you are an archivist and you are looking for a job, please do not be put off by the negativity that some of our colleagues wish to throw around. The majority of us are good, decent, hard-working people who are striving to create inclusive, diverse, supportive, and caring places to live and work.

In the words of the great philosopher, Winne the Pooh, "When life throws you a rainy day, play in the puddles." He also said, "Just because an animal is large, it doesn't mean he doesn't want kindness; however big Tigger seems to be, remember that he wants as much kindness as Roo."

Nick
