I have found the occasional religious site online that has said with great certainty (and maybe some delight) that Twain is currently in hell for his alleged atheism (he would say he was there for the company, of course).
Maybe he isn't a more high-profile target because those who would be inclined to attack him for his views on fundamentalist Christianity haven't read many of his works and know him mainly as the folksy guy in white puffing on a cigar and telling tales of boys' adventures along the Mississippi.

I'm astonished that it has taken the right wing so long to attack Twain's vi=
ews on fundamentalist Christianity. Twain was certainly no friend either of=
Calvinism or Biblical literalism, and Huck's naive "Why don't deacon Winn g=
et back the money he lost on pork?"(I'm quoting from memory and I'm over fif=
ty--please don't correct my lapses unless you wish to appear ageist), and un=
cle Phelps preaching a sermon that was widely considered great because nobod=
y could understand it are two of my favorite digs. And, yes, Hal is right t=
o remind us that Clemens was sympathetic to the ameliorative and Arminian Ch=
ristianity of Clemens's Bushnell-following neighbors, but those Fred Chappel=
l calls the back-woods crazies, the descendants of whom now populate various=
fundamentalist mega-churches, were always targets of Twain's derision, ofte=
n quite intense. See, for instance, "Letter from the Recording Angel." =20
So why has it taken so long for this particular kind of book hater to turn t=
he gunsights on all things Twain? =20
