Sir,
No, it is not easy at all. It is a challenge to have students today closely read every word and think about what they are reading.
It is a miracle I can even teach Huck Finn today where it is banned in some public school systems in New Jersey. Some of my public school colleagues don’t even mention teaching Huck Finn, or they won’t get tenure and face termination.
You bring up interesting points that I am excited to teach in conjunction with Huck Finn, even given the extraordinarily limited time I have with the students thanks to the virus. You have educated me and I thank you for your historical points.
However, to be clear, I wasn’t trying to “help” anything. I was just simply offering what my students said that I thought was humorous. They may not be as wide-ranging in thought as you have no doubt seen on the collegiate level, but at least they are reading and reacting. They aren’t perfect, who is? So in this humor, I suggest we agree to disagree and should perhaps leave it at that.
On another point you made, while I respect your friends, their backgrounds, and your work as a firefighter, I obviously did not lump them into the comments my students made, how can I and why would I?
Let’s put it another way: anyone, no matter their background, who stormed through my U.S. Capitol and put every person, Republican or Democrat or whatever, in that building in physical danger and threatened the destruction of the Republic was absolutely wrong to effect change that way. They should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
I do lump Paps, and Kings and Dukes into that mob. All of them? I didn’t say that, my students made jokes that lightened the extraordinary tension being felt by all of us here in New Jersey right now. With more education, they will become more measured with their words, but at least they can read and talk about and reference Huck Finn, a lot of students in many U.S high school classrooms cannot.
Lastly, I take great time and effort in showing my students that Mark Twain was not a racist using the examples from Critical Companion, Lighting Out for the Territory and Was Huck Black?
So in these times right now, when many of my friends and I are “on edge” because we saw what was done to the Capitol, and five people are dead (the Capitol Police officer was from NJ but I guess that doesn’t matter, he was a human being in any case), we can agree to disagree and simply move on.
