Hal may be the best candidate to answer this observation — how akin to
belief in and rejection of conspiracy theories are Mark Twain’s
observations on religion and the Bible? Dwayne Eutsey in his article in the
MTJ (Spring 2018) discussed Twain’s rejection of freemasonry as
“foolishness”. Autobiographical dictation of June 20, 1906 has Twain
presenting a long rejection of the idea of “immaculate conception” which —
by the way — he confused with the religious belief in virgin birth. The
summer of 1909 was another time he engaged with the religious arguments
regarding virgin birth. Can conspiracy theories be equated with and as
powerful as religious beliefs?
