I don't know about if Twain said, but I certainly agree with the
sentiment.  It's good to be balanced, but it's also good to get thrown
off that very high horse for the same reason.  From what I've read of
Twain's quotes, I don't think he's the type to advocate balance -- he
always struck me more as living in the moment (consequence be damned),
and the second quote you mentioned seems to go with that.
